📋 SUMMARY

You've almost certainly come across the SWOT: business plan, market research, investor pitch, ... It's the one tool every leader knows by name.

Yet, almost no one focuses it on what really makes a business run: people. And even when applied to HR, the classic SWOT analysis has a major flaw: it describes, but doesn't trigger anything.

That's exactly where SWOTCA comes in — the version that finally moves you to action.

A tool you already master... without realising it.

If you run a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME), you have probably already completed a SWOT analysis.

Four boxes: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. ou pull it out to size up a market, win over a bank manager, or frame a new product.

It's a business reflex.

But here's the paradox : it's used for almost everything, except for the most fragile and strategic thing in a small structure, its team.

Why? Because people management is often driven by instinct. As long as things are running smoothly, you don't stop to look around. You know your colleagues, you sense the tensions, you can guess who might leave.

And then one day, a key person leaves, a critical skill disappears with them, and we realize that we had never laid things out on the table.

The good news : you already know how to use the tool to prevent this . You just need to point it in the right direction.

The HR SWOT analysis: establishing an honest assessment of the current situation

Applying SWOT to your human resources means answering four simple questions, without lying to yourself.

Your strengths . What holds together thanks to your teams?

Perhaps a core group of loyal employees, rare versatility, an atmosphere that retains people. These are real assets, even if they don't appear in any chart.

Your weaknesses. Where are the internal problems?

A single person with critical knowledge. Non-existent onboarding. Managers who have never been trained to manage. These are internal weaknesses, which you can control.

Your opportunities. What does your environment offer you?

A pool of multilingual profiles in your region, training assistance, a competitor that lays off and releases good employees.

Your threats. What is eluding you that could strike you?

Shortages in certain professions, legal changes, and the attractiveness of a better-structured competitor.

Doing this exercise is already a step away from flying blind.

This is exactly the logic of the HR assessment : before solving, we look clearly at where we stand.

But stopping there is precisely the trap that transforms most SWOTs into dead tables, forgotten at the bottom of a file.

Why the classic SWOT analysis is not enough

A SWOT analysis gives you a snapshot . A snapshot is useful: it captures a reality at a specific moment. But a snapshot doesn't tell you what to do next.

You have identified that only one collaborator possesses critical knowledge.

And now what? You've spotted an interesting recruitment opportunity.

Where to begin? The SWOT analysis provides the diagnosis, then leaves you alone facing a blank page.

This is why so many analyses end without follow-up : they describe a problem without opening the slightest door to the solution.

SWOTCA fills this gap .

SWOTCA: From observation to action

SWOTCA takes the four squares of SWOT and adds two decisive steps, those that are always missing.

C is for Capabilities (your actual abilities).

Before rushing in, we ask ourselves: what concrete resources can I use to act?

Your time, your budget, the skills already present, your network, an external partner to rely on.

This is the step that brings the analysis back down to earth. An identified weakness cannot be magically corrected: it must be corrected with the resources you actually have.

A is for Actions (the concrete plan).

For each critical point, a specific action.

Knowledge held by a single person ? We document the procedures and form a pair.

Non-existent onboarding ? We'll build a simple two-week program.

No grand strategic cabinet plan: concrete, prioritized, realistic actions.

This is the step that transforms analysis into decisions.

That's the whole difference. SWOT describes your situation. SWOTCA tells you what to do with what you have available.

It is actually a simple logic: to transpose to the HR of SMEs a tool that the world of strategy usually reserves for business.

Not to produce a beautiful document, but to leave with three or four clear actions.

Where to begin?

No need to block out a day or use any software.

A sheet of paper, a pencil, an hour of peace and quiet.

Draw your four boxes, fill them in honestly, then add the two columns that change everything: what can I act on, and what do I do first.

The goal is not perfection. It's to stop being passive and start making decisions.

If you had to fill in these four boxes about your team today,

Which ones would remain desperately empty for lack of ever having thought about them?
